Fixing the Return to Work SA Scheme

I’m Fighting for Fairer Outcomes for Injured Workers

South Australians who are injured at work deserve a system that supports their recovery, respects their dignity, and helps them rebuild their lives. But right now, too many workers are being let down by a compensation scheme that’s complex, inconsistent, and often unfair.

As a member of the Parliamentary Committee reviewing the Return to Work SA scheme, I’ve heard heartbreaking stories from workers who’ve been cut off from support, denied treatment, or forced into financial hardship. These are people who got hurt doing their jobs, and they deserve better.

What I’ve Heard

  • Workers being medically retired but still deemed “fit for work” by the scheme.
  • People losing access to income support before they’re ready to return.
  • Families struggling to afford rehabilitation, medication, and basic living costs.
  • A system that feels adversarial, not supportive.

These stories aren’t rare, they’re systemic. And they demand urgent reform.

What I’m Fighting For

  • Fairer Assessments
Injured workers should be assessed by independent medical professionals—not just scheme-appointed doctors. We need transparency and consistency in how fitness for work is determined.
  • Extended Support for Recovery
Recovery doesn’t follow a fixed timeline. I’m pushing for more flexible support periods, especially for workers with complex injuries or mental health conditions.
  • Respect for Psychological Injury
Mental health matters. I’m advocating for better recognition and treatment of psychological injuries, including trauma caused by workplace bullying, harassment, or violence.
  • Simplified Processes
The system is too hard to navigate. I want clearer communication, easier access to information, and more support for workers trying to understand their rights.
  • Accountability and Oversight
Return to Work SA must be held accountable for how it treats injured workers. I support stronger oversight mechanisms and regular public reporting.

This Is About Justice

No one should be punished for getting hurt at work. I’ll keep fighting to make sure our workers’ compensation system is fair, compassionate, and fit for purpose.
If you’ve been affected by the Return to Work SA scheme or want to support reform, I invite you to share your story. Together, we can build a system that truly supports recovery, not just cost-cutting.

Because dignity shouldn’t end at the workplace door.
