Let’s Ban Gambling Advertising in South Australia

I’m Fighting to Protect Our Communities from Gambling Harm

Gambling harm is one of the most urgent public health issues facing South Australia and I’m determined to do something about it. Every day, we’re bombarded with gambling ads on our buses, trains, sporting broadcasts, and digital platforms. These ads don’t just promote a product, they normalise a behaviour that can destroy lives.

I believe it’s time we put the wellbeing of our communities ahead of gambling industry profits.

Why I’m Taking Action

  • Our Children Are Being Targeted
Gambling ads are everywhere, from public transport to footy matches to social media. Young people are growing up in an environment where gambling is portrayed as harmless fun. It’s not.
  • Late-Night Gambling Is Fuelled by Advertising
I’ve introduced legislation to restrict poker machine operating hours between 2am and 8am, because that’s when people are most vulnerable. Advertising during these hours only makes things worse.
  • Other States Are Leading the Way
Victoria and New South Wales have already banned gambling ads on public transport. South Australia should be next.

What I’ve Done So Far

  • I moved a motion in Parliament calling on the Malinauskas Government to ban gambling advertising on public transport and government-owned assets.
  • I’ve pushed for the implementation of recommendations from the Royal Commission into Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence, which identified gambling harm as a key driver of abuse.
  • I’ve called out broadcasters for breaching advertising codes during sporting events and demanded stronger enforcement.

What I’m Fighting For

  • A complete ban on gambling advertising on public transport and government infrastructure.
  • Stronger regulation of gambling ads during sporting broadcasts.
  • A phased ban on online gambling advertising, in line with national recommendations.
  • Education and support for families affected by gambling harm.
