Crushing Deepfake Abuse with the Full Weight of the Law

I’m Fighting to Protect Women and Girls from AI-Generated Exploitation

Late last month, the Federal Court handed down a landmark ruling: a man who created and distributed deepfake pornographic images of prominent Australian women was fined $343,500. It was the first case of its kind in the country, and a chilling reminder of how technology is being weaponised to violate, humiliate, and exploit.

I was proud to successfully introduce pioneering legislation last year that makes the creation and distribution of deepfake invasive images a criminal offence in South Australia. These offences now carry heavy fines and prison sentences, because anything less would be a betrayal of the victims.

Why This Matters

AI is being used to create deepfake revenge porn and sexually explicit images of minors. These images are being shared in schools, on social media, and across anonymous forums. The degree to which this is happening should terrify parents across Australia.

Overwhelmingly, it is women and young girls who are the targets. The emotional and psychological toll on victims is devastating. Deepfakes are not just digital manipulation, they are digital violence.

What I’ve Done

  • I introduced legislation that criminalises the creation, possession, and distribution of deepfake invasive images.
  • I addressed media and Parliament to raise awareness of the growing threat of AI-generated abuse, especially in schools.
  • I worked closely with legal experts, educators, and victim advocates to ensure the laws are strong, enforceable, and survivor-focused.

What I’m Calling For

  • National consistency in deepfake laws across all states and territories.
  • Education programs in schools to help students understand the risks and consequences of sharing deepfake content.
  • Support services for victims, including counselling and legal assistance.
  • Stronger tech regulation to hold platforms accountable for hosting and distributing deepfake material.

This Is About Safety, Dignity, and Justice

Deepfakes are a modern-day scourge. They strip victims of their agency, their privacy, and their peace of mind. I’ll keep fighting to ensure our laws evolve as fast as the technology—and that victims are never left behind.

If you’ve been affected or want to support the campaign, I invite you to get involved. Share your story, raise awareness, and help us stamp out deepfake abuse.

Because no one should be digitally violated, and no one should suffer in silence.
