Our Seniors

Older South Australians continue to make invaluable contributions to our society. SA-BEST is committed to ensuring their wellbeing, rights and dignity are upheld through comprehensive policies that address their unique needs and challenges.

SA-BEST is pushing for an inquiry into loneliness, in part considering its prevalence, causes and impacts among older South Australians. Loneliness is not just a social issue but a public health concern. Studies show its presence increases the risk of developing dementia by 50%. A report on the root cause of loneliness in our state would provide strategies to foster social connection and support networks for seniors.

Access to healthcare for seniors is a priority, including providing sufficient beds and resources in hospitals and aged care facilities. SA-BEST advocates for a rights-based approach to healthcare, respecting the autonomy and dignity of older adults whilst administering compassionate care.

SA-BEST recognises the current strain on emergency departments and the importance of ensuring South Australian seniors can access appropriate care services. Increased funding for community-based care and support services can provide emergency department visitation alternatives and ensure older people receive timely and appropriate care in their preferred setting.

Older South Australians deserve full and active community participation — to facilitate this, SA-BEST wholly supports the expansion of senior concessions. Free public transport, free or discounted access to recreational facilities, and other initiatives that promote social inclusion and well-being should be prioritised.

SA-BEST is currently working to amend the Retirement Village Act 2016 to protect village residents from opportunistic profiteering at their expense and will always listen to the voices of older South Australians to incorporate their perspectives into our policies.
