SA-BEST backs AMA's call for overseas-trained doctors

SA-BEST supports the Australian Medical Association's (AMA) call to make South Australia a destination of choice for overseas-trained doctors.

SA-BEST MLC Connie Bonaros said: “It is no secret that our health system is in crisis, and despite the empty promises rolled out by the major parties around election time, no-one has proposed a detailed and long-term health workforce strategy.

“We rely upon our highly skilled overseas trained doctors to provide critical GP, hospital and specialist services, and our community is the better for their contribution. Ensuring that our state cuts the red tape and creates real incentives, while not compromising on our high standards and expectations, will help to attract the best overseas-trained doctors to make South Australia their home.

“As the AMA has said, around half of our clinical workforce comprise international medical graduates, and many of them are now leaders in their field. They save lives every day and provide timely and effective care to regional and urban communities. Together with our locally trained doctors, they are there when we need them most,'' Ms Bonaros said.

“There has been a lot of divisive rhetoric around immigration lately. For those who are considering voting for candidates who espouse shallow anti-immigration messages, remember those messages when you or a loved one need urgent medical assistance delivered by an expert clinician.

"I’ll bet your focus is on ensuring you or your loved one receive expert care in a timely fashion, and not which country your doctor graduated from.

“Let’s listen to the AMA and work with the experts to make South Australia the most attractive choice for the best overseas-trained doctors available.''

SA-BEST believes when it comes to the health care needs of our state, we need to listen to the experts - let's get it done.
